Safety

Criminality

Yes! There is criminality in Ecuador as well; from smaller offences to murder. But in which country doesn't this exist? A few tips to reduce the chances that something might happen to you.

- Don't walk around like a 'real' tourist, try to dress and behave neutral.

- Keep your camera in your bag and out of sight of other people. Take care as well with jewelry. TIP: leave the things you really don't want to loose at home.

- Don't walk around alone during the night: this doesn't only go for tourists, the locals watch out at night as well. So take a cab if you have to go out late.

- Are you walking out on the street and you don't trust something? In this case, try to find other people. Take care in the old center of - Make inquiries on the spot about which places are and aren't safe.

- Traveling by trolleybus in Quito is ideal and cheap, which means that a lot of people choose the trolley as a means of transport and that it's usually very busy. So keep your bag in front of you and don't put any valuables in your pockets.

- News on television, newspaper or radio can cause a lot of worries at home, so keep your loved ones informed about your whereabouts and how you are doing!!!

Drugs and alcohol

Those are both available in Ecuador. Drugs are illegal, but available. Alcohol is being served and sold everywhere. You can't take alcohol on the street, only in bars and restaurants and at home. Mind your alcohol and drugs use, because the police is becoming stricter in living up to the rules. Furthermore, alcohol is quite cheap so Ecuadorians aren't very economical with it. It is normal as well to offer someone a sip of your glass, if you refuse this it is normally taken as an insult. But, if you don't trust it, than don't drink.
